The orchestral portions of "A Day in the Life" reflect Lennon and McCartney's interest in the work of avant-garde composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio and John Cage.[39][nb 3] To fill the empty 24-bar middle section, Lennon's request to George Martin was that the orchestra should provide "a tremendous build-up, from nothing up to something absolutely like the end of the world".[42] McCartney suggested having the musicians improvise over the segment.[34] To allay concerns that classically trained musicians would be unable to do this, Martin wrote a loose score for the section.[43] Using the rhythm implied by Lennon's staggered intonation on the words "turn you on",[44] the score was an extended, atonal crescendo that encouraged the musicians to improvise within the defined framework.[34] The orchestral part was recorded on 10 February 1967 in Studio One at EMI Studios,[45] with Martin and McCartney conducting a 40-piece orchestra.[46] The recording session was completed at a total cost of £367 (equivalent to £6,113 in 2016)[47] for the players, an extravagance at the time.[48] Martin later described explaining his score to the puzzled orchestra:

To extend the growth phase as well as industry profits, firms approaching maturity can pursue expansion into other countries and new markets. Expansion into another geographic region is an effective response to declining demand. Because organizations have control over internal factors and can often influence external factors, the life cycle does not have to end.

If you spend all of your time in corporate roles, there is a good chance you might pursue your entire career without truly understanding the end-to-end mechanics that go into building a product or service. Whether it is a digital business or a new flavour of soda, understanding how to build a product that users want to pay for is extremely difficult. I have failed more times then I succeeded and in most situation I would go back to salaried/contractual work, relax for some time enjoying 9-to-5 working hours, rebuild financials, get bored, start it all over. I think taking a break is the most important part as it gives time to recharge, analyze what went wrong and what I would do better next time.

While innovations continue they are not as radical as before and may be only a change in color or formulation to stress "new" or "improved" to consumers. Laundry detergents are examples of mature products.

Quitting is your decision. There’s a huge spectrum of tools you can use to fix up a broken thing. You can change the product, switch customer segments. You can recapitalize the company, reset the team, and fire your cofounders. You can (usually) find a way to keep going if you want to. Whether or not you want to quit, that’s up to you, but don’t think that quitting and starting a new thing will let you start something up without passing through this difficult phase

*Side note — Most startups think way too broadly about who their target customer is. You MUST be hyper specific here. For user acquisition purposes, your target customers are NOT working mothers or marketers (they may be exactly that for the sake of fundraising, since you need to demonstrate a huge addressable market for your product). Example — In the beginning, New Relic didn’t see their target customers as developers, they zeroed in on Ruby on Rails developers as their early adopters and became a voice within that very niche community. Later they expanded to serve a larger population of developers as they scaled.
