Another way to say that is, if you try to start the kind of startup that has to be a big consumer brand, the odds against succeeding are steeper. The best odds are in niche markets. Since startups make money by offering people something better than they had before, the best opportunities are where things suck most. And it would be hard to find a place where things suck more than in corporate IT departments. You would not believe the amount of money companies spend on software, and the crap they get in return. This imbalance equals opportunity.
When Tien returned from her trip, she still didn’t have it quite figured out, and the first job she took (at an auto dealership), she did so because frankly, she “needed income.” It was OK for a while. A self-described people person, Tien explains that she “always enjoyed making people happy, talking to them, and turning their situations around,” so she was able to thrive in the customer service role—at first.
Take-away: In a business partnership, formalize the process and paperwork, and hire a lawyer who can spot problems you never dreamed would arise--just in case things get personal. And of course, choose your partners wisely. "It's so important to find people who share your values and ethics," she says. "There are a lot of things you can paper over, and having different sets of opinions is valuable, but not when it comes down to code of conduct."
“The initial 7 years were all about having negative working capital, positive cash flow and a sustained ability to fund our own growth. Those were the only metrics we tracked. In the last 3–4 years, though, I can honestly state that somewhere I lost my path. I started treasuring GMV, room-nights and other ‘vanity’ metrics instead of the fundamentals of cash flow and working capital,” he explained.
You should only become a startup consultant if you, like most entrepreneurs, are a little bit crazy and have so much entrepreneurial DNA you can't handle a "normal" job.  After leaving the i-banking world, I founded one small startup that did ok (small exit) and tried to start another during b-school.  It failed the week of graduation and as such, I had missed all on campus recruiting.  Having zero job offers (or even prospects) was oddly liberating, and I took to heart some advice from a professor-- "find out what you love to do, and do it well enough that people will pay you for it."  I loved startups, I loved consulting, I didn't have any new ideas for starting a startup, so I put these pieces together and hung out the shingle for VentureArchetypes. 
The flip side of working with dreamers, visionaries, and the "Crazy Ones" is that you're working with dreamers, visionaries, and, literally, the "Crazy Ones."  It's an understatement when I say there are a lot  of wacky people who are starting companies (the old joke is that you call yourself an "entrepreneur" when you can't get anyone to hire you and give you a proper job title :). 
It is a hard step to go from a hypothetical solution to a real product, which are people willing to actually pay for. Therefore at this stage is no way around to invest money to measure, if the public approves your project. Especially technological companies are doing this for crowdfunding campaigns. For instance the smartwatch Pebble made 10 million Dollar with its Kickstarter campaign. As the people wanted the smartwatch, they were willing to spend their money on it.

It's hard to tell whether you're a good hacker, especially when you're young. Fortunately the process of starting startups tends to select them automatically. What drives people to start startups is (or should be) looking at existing technology and thinking, don't these guys realize they should be doing x, y, and z? And that's also a sign that one is a good hacker.
Besides being cheaper and better to work in, apartments tend to be in better locations than office buildings. And for a startup location is very important. The key to productivity is for people to come back to work after dinner. Those hours after the phone stops ringing are by far the best for getting work done. Great things happen when a group of employees go out to dinner together, talk over ideas, and then come back to their offices to implement them. So you want to be in a place where there are a lot of restaurants around, not some dreary office park that's a wasteland after 6:00 PM. Once a company shifts over into the model where everyone drives home to the suburbs for dinner, however late, you've lost something extraordinarily valuable. God help you if you actually start in that mode.

Tell me how I slept, with an accelerometer I have in my head, not laying next to me on the bed. I grind my teeth. I'd pay for a head mounted accelerometer to track my sleep. Have it syncc to fitbit or something. See if you can get acquired by them as an accessory.

For a variety of reasons, more on the side of the money guys and not because of us, the transaction didn’t go through … We had several groups looking to acquire us, and for a variety of reasons those didn’t pan out … We were building an enterprise software platform. It was a very expensive proposition, with high potential rewards … There was a high demand and high interest in what we were doing. That is what was so disappointing. I think you will see several companies license our technology … This has nothing to do with the competition. It has to do with the funding issue. I think there is huge demand for new approaches with game engine technology.
Businesses in this stage often see rapid growth in both revenue and cash flow as the blueprint has now been established, but be warned about getting too comfortable. In business, if you are not moving forward you are moving backwards, and without a constant, almost nervous itch or desire to expand, complacency can set in, and you might get caught off guard.
“I lost $9 million in a day. I was on the set of one of my favorite TV shows. Then I got a text message: ‘Board call in 15 minutes.’ I went on the call. Right away the CEO said, ‘I have some bad news.’ The largest shareholder owed $90 million in back taxes and he had not disclosed this to the company. The bank that loaned the company money claimed that this withholding of information broke the agreement of the loan. So they wanted their money back instantly. Within a day the bank took every division of the company and just handed it over almost for free to other clients of the bank that were in the same industry. I got off the call and I was in shock. I was out in the middle of nowhere on this TV show and no way to get home. No way to even cry. I felt sick. I felt worse than sick. I was basically going to go broke. Again. Or at least it felt that way.”
Keep in mind that not all products follow a bell-shaped life cycle pattern as shown in the diagram above. Researchers have identified over a dozen different Product Life Cycle patterns. For example, a fashion fad becomes popular quickly, peak early, and decline very fast. Fads don't usually last long because most of them don't satisfy a strong need.

The other reason to spend money slowly is to encourage a culture of cheapness. That's something Yahoo did understand. David Filo's title was "Chief Yahoo," but he was proud that his unofficial title was "Cheap Yahoo." Soon after we arrived at Yahoo, we got an email from Filo, who had been crawling around our directory hierarchy, asking if it was really necessary to store so much of our data on expensive RAID drives. I was impressed by that. Yahoo's market cap then was already in the billions, and they were still worrying about wasting a few gigs of disk space.

You can reimburse your employees under an accountable plan based on travel days, miles, or some other fixed allowance. The big problem with this approach – and company founders will certainly agree here – is that it doesn't reflect the company's future potential for generating sales, profits and return on investment. What's more, the cost-to-duplicate approach doesn't capture intangible assets, like brand value, that the venture might possess even at an early stage of development. In March 2016, after having been rejected by 114 VC funds, we signed a term sheet with a French, state-owned, logistics group, for a 30M euro investment. Unfortunately, after 3 months of intensive due diligence, their board rejected the deal and they ended up withdrawing their offer. We were negotiating with them under an exclusivity agreement, didn’t have a plan B, and only had a couple of weeks of run-way left.

The problem, he said, was that customers in home improvement turned out to be more price sensitive than he’d expected, while the margins remained low and repeat business was a challenge.

You can elect to capitalize carrying charges separately for each project you have and for each type of carrying charge. Your election is good for only 1 year for unimproved and unproductive real property. You must decide whether to capitalize carrying charges each year the property remains unimproved and unproductive. #3: Take a brief time-out if you can. A failed business is sort of like a failed relationship. You need time to heal. If you can't afford a brief time-out, try to find some consulting work until you've had a chance to gain more perspective. There is no universal definition for the various stages of the industry lifecycle, but, commonly, it is organized into conception, growth, maturity and decline. The relative length of each phase can also vary substantially among industries. The standard model typically deals with manufactured goods, but today's service economy can function somewhat differently, especially in the realm of internet communications technology.
By trying to play in the pure storage business, Nirvanix found itself in a market that, over the past five years, became increasingly commoditized by Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure and now Google Compute Engine, which have all been engaging in a price war. With no service to offer on top of its storage, Nirvanix did not stand a great chance of differentiating from such large competitors.
Pre PLM, all information was isolated which resulted in issues with sharing information quickly and easily across groups. There was also the issue of legacy technologies that hindered collaboration and resulted in a lack of shared product knowledge. Because of this isolation, there were concerns about the integrity of data as well as supplicate efforts in recording data into systems. These isolated systems meant that for anyone to be shifted across a division, there would need to be significant resource allocation for retraining activities.

2. Get your finances in order. Next, make sure you get your personal finances in order. You’ll no longer be able to rely on your business as a primary source of income, and if you had a significant amount of your own personal savings tied up in the business, you may lose them in the business’s failure. Even if you end up having to declare bankruptcy, don’t worry — there can still be a bright financial future ahead of you — but you need to spend some time analyzing your expenses and figuring out a new line of revenue if you’re going to be successful.


The IRS also disallowed some itemized deductions claimed on the taxpayer’s 2009 and 2010 returns. The disallowed deductions resulted in a delinquent tax bill of about $30,000. The IRS also imposed a 20% substantial understatement penalty on the additional tax due. The Tax Court upheld both the IRS deficiency and the understatement penalty (Tarighi v. Commissioner, T.C. Summary Opinion 2015-28).
