A lot of entrepreneurs quit when they hit the Trough of Sorrow, struggle for 12-24 months, and face up to the reality that they’ll have to raise another dilutive round. Is this a good time to quit? Maybe. But given that the majority of startups go through this kind of stage, I’d actually argue that it’s just part of struggle to being successful. Sometimes it just takes 3 years to get through the Trough of Sorrow, but on the other side is something that might really be worth the pain. Maybe :)
“Before Touch of Modern, we spent a year and 800K on a project that, at its core, could not scale. After the initial failure, our investors jokingly said, ‘Consider it tuition.’ We meandered along for a year slowly bleeding money. What I regret most is not that we failed, but that we did not fail quickly enough. During this situation, turns out we did not know the difference between success and failure. We held on to really tiny successes among our small group of users as signs that we had something that worked. We thought that the way we struggled was just the way the way the startup life was. The solution we have now to prevent the same mistake is to launch things on a small scale, do it quickly and establish beforehand very concretely what goals we have to hit for the initiative to be considered successful and for us to keep investing. If we don’t hit those goals, we evaluate objectively and move on knowing that the most valuable thing we have is the time we will be spending in the future, not the time we spent in the past.”
Start by writing software for smaller companies, because it's easier to sell to them. It's worth so much to sell stuff to big companies that the people selling them the crap they currently use spend a lot of time and money to do it. And while you can outhack Oracle with one frontal lobe tied behind your back, you can't outsell an Oracle salesman. So if you want to win through better technology, aim at smaller customers. [4]
Participants who anticipated career change planfully and realistically, even when their jobs appeared to be secure, cited better experiences of the transition and perceived themselves to be coping better than did participants who ignored signs of change or reacted unrealistically soon after job loss. Plan and be prepared, even when things are going well.
Startup costs of a newly formed subsidiary are deductible by the parent if in substance the newly formed subsidiary is merely a branch or division of the parent (Baltimore Aircoil Co.,333 F. Supp. 705 (D. Md. 1971)). In Baltimore Aircoil, the company formed a wholly owned subsidiary in the state of California and geographically split its operations between the parent and the new subsidiary. The purpose for forming this new entity was to more competitively manufacture, market, and distribute its products on the West Coast. In effect, a new branch was formed, and expenses for travel, moving, training, printing, and telephone were deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses.
A specific classification of worker that is not an employee of the company. Usually distinguished by 1) whether the business has a right to direct and control how the worker does the task for which the worker is hired, 2) whether the company has a right to control the business aspects of the worker’s job, and 3) what kind of relationship the worker has to the business.
At the end of the night, the four Beatles and some of their guests overdubbed an extended humming sound to close the song – an idea that they later discarded. Spending time fixating on the failure doesn't provide any benefit. In fact, it can make it even more difficult to move on because it is all you are thinking about. What you should be doing is clearing your mind so you can think clearly about what to do next. Find something that can distract you for awhile. It could be taking on a traditional job in someone else's company. Or, it might be the opportune time to take an extended vacation if it's financially feasible. You could also try volunteering for an organization because you are transferring the focus from yourself to another person or group's needs.
If you pay or incur exploration costs for a mine or other natural deposit located outside the United States, you cannot deduct all the costs in the current year. You can elect to include the costs (other than for an oil, gas, or geothermal well) in the adjusted basis of the mineral property to figure cost depletion. (Cost depletion is discussed in chapter 9.) If you do not make this election, you must deduct the costs over the 10-year period beginning with the tax year in which you pay or incur them. These rules also apply to foreign development costs.
I was great at customer support though. Customers loved us. And we loved them, because when you're growing slow by word of mouth, your first batch of users are the ones who were smart enough to find you by themselves. And not only will they give you this advice for free, they'll pay you.

A certified pollution control facility is a new identifiable treatment facility used in connection with a plant or other property in operation before 1976, to reduce or control water or atmospheric pollution or contamination. The facility must do so by removing, changing, disposing, storing, or preventing the creation or emission of pollutants, contaminants, wastes, or heat. The facility must be certified by state and federal certifying authorities.
…as we forayed into smaller cities, delivery networks got more fragmented and lethargic. This needed to be researched more and understood better. We found that while tiers 2 and 3 of Indian cities are being served to some extent by new-world logistics providers doing cool things like one-day shipping, there was a whole slew of tier 3.5+ cities which are connected to the world of ecommerce but, in simple terms, have to sometimes wait up to 30 days to receive their orders.

This responsibility makes you more inclined to consider numerous alternatives, to be nimble, and to drive changes from inception to execution at pace. The small scale of a new venture gives you the ability to see the results of your pivots very quickly, and it forces you to test multiple ideas in real time. Whether you remain an entrepreneur or return to a corporate role, you will have greatly enhanced your ability to think unconventionally and to convert ideas into tangible opportunities.
Failure is one of the best learning experiences you can have as a founder. Unfortunately, it’s just a lot to go through emotionally, and you’re going to have many feelings surrounding it. Sometimes the best thing you can do with those feelings and with what you’re learning from failure is to share them. This will help you to get your feelings off your chest, and if you share what you are learning with other founders, they can learn from your mistakes, too. This takes the form of a “startup post mortem” where you share openly about what happened and any lessons learned. You may actually find that writing about a failure is incredibly therapeutic. Sometimes the VCs want to install a new CEO of their own choosing. Usually the claim is that you need someone mature and experienced, with a business background. Maybe in some cases this is true. And yet Bill Gates was young and inexperienced and had no business background, and he seems to have done ok. Steve Jobs got booted out of his own company by someone mature and experienced, with a business background, who then proceeded to ruin the company. So I think people who are mature and experienced, with a business background, may be overrated. We used to call these guys "newscasters," because they had neat hair and spoke in deep, confident voices, and generally didn't know much more than they read on the teleprompter.
In the case of mines, wells, and other natural deposits other than gas, oil, or geothermal property, you may use the percentage rates discussed earlier under Mines and Geothermal Deposits . Any bonus or advanced royalty payments are generally part of the gross income from the property to which the rates are applied in making the calculation. However, for oil, gas, or geothermal property, gross income does not include lease bonuses, advanced royalties, or other amounts payable without regard to production from the property.
The cost of repairing or improving property used in your trade or business is either a deductible or capital expense. Routine maintenance that keeps your property in a normal efficient operating condition, but that doesn’t materially increase the value or substantially prolong the useful life of the property, is deductible in the year that it is incurred. Otherwise, the cost must be capitalized and depreciated. See Form 4562 and its instructions for how to figure and claim the depreciation deduction.
In addition, if the startup costs related to the business exceed $50,000, the taxpayer must reduce the $5,000 limit on the deduction (but not below zero) by the startup costs over $50,000 (Sec. 195(b)(1)(A)). If the startup costs are $55,000 or more, the taxpayer cannot deduct any of the startup costs except as an amortization deduction. Example 2 illustrates the tax treatment for a corporation that incurred more than $50,000 but less than $55,000 of startup costs.
Goldberg began fund-raising in the spring but he quickly discovered money was harder to round up than he'd anticipated. He also began to see that Fab had serious issues, caused by growth tactics the company had implemented in 2012. Europe, Goldberg realized, was a disaster. There is an array of start-up expenses that you will need to incur, especially if you are starting from scratch.
For gift loans between individuals, forgone interest treated as transferred back to the lender is limited to the borrower's net investment income for the year. This limit applies if the outstanding loans between the lender and borrower total $100,000 or less. If the borrower's net investment income is $1,000 or less, it is treated as zero. This limit does not apply to a loan if the avoidance of any federal tax is one of the main purposes of the interest arrangement.

If the proceeds were used in a nonpassive trade or business activity, report the interest on Schedule E (Form 1040), line 28; enter "interest expense" and the name of the partnership or S corporation in column (a) and the amount in column (h). If the proceeds were used in a passive activity, follow the Instructions for Form 8582 to determine the amount of interest expense that can be reported on Schedule E (Form 1040), line 28; enter "interest expense" and the name of the partnership in column (a) and the amount in column (f). If the proceeds were used in an investment activity, enter the interest on Form 4952. If the proceeds are used for personal purposes, the interest is generally not deductible.
Thankfully, Norwegians are in most cases very trustworthy and transparent already. They are also very pragmatic. So ending your startup as gracefully as possible is especially important. In a small country people talk and word travels fast. You would much rather people say, “Yes, it’s unfortunate things didn’t work out but he/she did their best” than something like “Wow, yeah that was a total shit show all the way to the end.” So be honest and fair as you do, at least the best you can as things are collapsing around you.
I don't think the amount of bullshit you have to deal with in a startup is more than you'd endure in an ordinary working life. It's probably less, in fact; it just seems like a lot because it's compressed into a short period. So mainly what a startup buys you is time. That's the way to think about it if you're trying to decide whether to start one. If you're the sort of person who would like to solve the money problem once and for all instead of working for a salary for 40 years, then a startup makes sense.

If you provide your employees with a per diem allowance that covers lodging, meals, and incidental expenses, you must treat an amount equal to the federal M&IE rate for the area of travel as an expense for food and beverages. If the per diem allowance you provide is less than the federal per diem rate for the area of travel, you can treat 40% of the per diem allowance as the amount for food and beverages.

At the time, Lennon and McCartney denied that there were drug references in "A Day in the Life" and publicly complained about the ban at a dinner party at the home of their manager, Brian Epstein, celebrating their album's release. Lennon said that the song was simply about "a crash and its victim", and called the line in question "the most innocent of phrases".[78] McCartney later said: "This was the only one in the album written as a deliberate provocation. A stick-that-in-your-pipe ... But what we want is to turn you on to the truth rather than pot."[80] The Beatles nevertheless aligned themselves with the drug culture in Britain by paying for (at McCartney's instigation) a full-page advertisement in The Times, in which, along with 60 other signatories, they and Epstein denounced the law against marijuana as "immoral in principle and unworkable in practice".[81] In addition, on 19 June, McCartney confirmed to an ITN reporter, further to his statement in a recent Life magazine interview, that he had taken LSD.[82] Described by MacDonald as a "careless admission", it led to condemnation of McCartney in the British press, recalling the outcry caused by the publication of Lennon's "More popular than Jesus" remark in the US in 1966.[83][84] The BBC ban on the song was eventually lifted on 13 March 1972.[85][nb 7]


The self-employed workforce, which today accounts for 55 million Americans, or roughly 36 percent of the American workforce, is rapidly growing. One segment of self-employed are on-demand workers which provides an alternative to the nine-to-five job and companies such as Uber, Airbnb, and GrubHub are effectively reshaping the economy. Other segments include freelancers, independent contractors and other businesses of one. It’s forecasted that by 2020 there will be more than 60 million Americans who are in some aspect self-employed.
