This term generally refers to a young enterprise that is three years old or younger. During this phase, a company is still in its novel stages of development. They could be in the process of experimenting with new products or services that they intend to market in the near future and/or may have viable products that are already available to the public.4
For most startups – especially those that have yet to start generating earnings – the bulk of the value rests on future potential. Discounted cash flow analysis then represents an important valuation approach. DCF involves forecasting how much cash flow the company will produce in the future, and then, using an expected rate of investment return, calculating how much that cash flow is worth. A higher discount rate is typically applied to startups, as there is a high risk that the company will inevitably fail to generate sustainable cash flows.

After my failed hedge fund attempt, I took a job that only paid me $36K/year as a customer support stock broker. I was broke and heartbroken and need time to heal. Getting such an easy job was the best decision. It freed me psychologically so that I can think of my next big move. I saved up and made quite a bit of money trading in my brokerage account. The money became seed money and personal “survival cash” for my startup Dealflicks, which was valued up to a $15M valuation at its peak.

Bengaluru: Flipkart co-founder and former chief executive Sachin Bansal is considering raising a fund of $700 million-$1 billion for investing in startups, two people familiar with the matter said. Bansal, who is set to make $1 billion in cash after leaving Flipkart in May, could contribute up to 40% of the fund, the people cited above said. The Flipkart co-founder is also considering investing in, and running, an artificial intelligence startup, the people said. Mint could not ascertain the name of the startup.

The most significant drawback to a remote team is the administrative hassle. It’s a pain to manage payroll, unemployment, insurance, etc in one state. It’s a freaking nightmare to manage in three states (well, two states and a district), even though we paid a payroll service to take care of it. Apparently, once your startup gets larger, there are companies that will manage this with minimal hassle, but for a small team, it was a major annoyance and distraction.
We talked to a number of VCs, but eventually we ended up financing our startup entirely with angel money. The main reason was that we feared a brand-name VC firm would stick us with a newscaster as part of the deal. That might have been ok if he was content to limit himself to talking to the press, but what if he wanted to have a say in running the company? That would have led to disaster, because our software was so complex. We were a company whose whole m.o. was to win through better technology. The business relationship itself began after Grewal became an MP, and was disclosed with the ethics commissioner at the time.

There is one reason you might want to include business people in a startup, though: because you have to have at least one person willing and able to focus on what customers want. Some believe only business people can do this-- that hackers can implement software, but not design it. That's nonsense. There's nothing about knowing how to program that prevents hackers from understanding users, or about not knowing how to program that magically enables business people to understand them.
