Many of us have been in a situation where we have to get something from the dollar store. They are great for some things, but they are also not great for things that you do frequently. So, I’ve got 7 ways to save money at the dollar store!

Everyone knows that the dollar store is a great place to pick up some hard-to-find items, and here are a few ideas how to save even more money.

There are a lot of ways to save money at the Dollar Store, but most people don’t even know they exist. If you want to save more than a few dollars every time you go, you’re going to have to be a little more creative than just looking for the cheapest item on the shelf.

I love my husband very much, but honestly, my first love was the dollar store. I remember coming out of the Dollar Tree feeling like a queen after spending my $7 on cheap jewelry. Twenty years later, I still love the Dollar Store, but now I buy more practical things there, like snacks, party decorations and greeting cards. And I’m not the only one obsessed with dollar stores: There are 34,000 dollar stores in the U.S. alone, and there are more every day. Some dollar store brands, like Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Only, promise that everything is only $1. Other brands, like B. Dollar General, charge $1 to $20 but promise significant savings on everyday items. But I’ll let you in on a secret: With the right planning, you can spend less than a dollar at these stores. Check out these 7 tips to save more money and find the best deals at Dollar Store. word-image-2641

7 tips to save money at theDollar Store

It’s amazing that you can spend $10 at Dollar Tree and get a full basket. But if you really want to save more money at the dollar store, these 7 tips will help you save a few bucks.

1. Controlling equipment prices

Yes, you can buy a bag of bread or a box of pasta for $1 at the dollar store. But these basic needs are already cheap at the grocery store. In my case, it doesn’t even make sense to buy rice, pasta or bread at Dollar Tree – they’re cheaper elsewhere. Example: A box of noodles costs 88 cents at the grocery store, while a smaller box of noodles costs $1 at Dollar Tree. If you really want to know if a product is a good deal in a dollar store, calculate the price per unit. For example, both the grocery store and the Dollar Tree may charge $1 per ounce for pasta, but the price per ounce may be lower at the grocery store. You’ll need to travel back and forth between stores a few times and do some calculations, but if you’re desperate to save money, you need to keep an eye on unit prices.

2. Earn cashback

While you can’t get cashback directly through Dollar Stores, it’s still a great way to save money. I use my 2.5% credit card for everything, including dollar store purchases. Some cashback apps, like Dosh, automatically sync with your bank account to calculate rebates. You won’t get rich from it, but if you shop often enough, you can save a few hundred dollars a year.

3. Online store (real!)

It may sound strange, but yes, you can shop online at stores like Dollar Tree and Dollar General. You have to pay shipping when you receive the item at home, but they offer free shipping to the store. This is a good option if your dollar store doesn’t have the stuff you need. Oh, and don’t forget browser-based cashback portals like Honey! This way you can earn even more rewards without any extra effort, so give it a try. If you shop online a lot, you can have your Honey Gold paid out faster than you think.

4. Stack coupons

Did you know you can use both manufacturer coupons and store coupons at dollar stores? It’s legal, so try to stack discount coupons the next time you stop by Dollar Tree or Dollar General. Mostly branded items, like Dawn dish soap or Marie Calendar frozen meals, for which the manufacturer’s coupons are valid.

5. Sign up for the store’s mailing list or theInsider program.

Want to know the latest news about sales and discounts? Just sign up for the Dollar Store mailing list. You can also follow them on social media or check out their blog. For example, Dollar Tree launched the Value Seekers blog to inform customers about special offers, seasonal DIYs and more. If you’re a die-hard dollar store fanatic, you should definitely do this.

6. Avoiding sub-standard and hazardous products

Look, there’s a reason everything at the Dollar Store is cheap: The products are not of high quality. In fact, sometimes these cheap products can be downright dangerous to your health. Everyone is different, but my experience is that I skip these at the dollar store:

  • Expired food: Don’t do it. Always check the expiration date before buying anything edible at the supermarket.
  • Public health Article: These include skin care products, cosmetics such as nail polish, vitamins and medicines. If your life depends on it, buy somewhere else.
  • Electronics: Dollar Tree’s earbuds break after a week of use. If you’re not happy with electronics that constantly break down, save your money to buy something better.
  • Tools: Commercial keys break in half if you try hard to use them.
  • Batteries: This may take a few hours. There’s a reason Duracell is so expensive – quality batteries are worth the extra cost.

7. Get to know your shop

Remember that every dollar store is different, especially if you are buying from a regional or local store. The best way to save money is to go to the dollar store at least a few times a month. This gives you an overview of stock and sales. Over time, you will know when to shop, what to buy and how to save more money in your store. word-image-7445

7 best deals at the Dollar Store

I’ve talked about dollar stores before, but what’s it really worth? In over 20 years of shopping the dollar store, I’ve made sure these 7 products are reasonably priced – $1.

1. Party goods

I’ll let you in on a little secret: In college, I organized women’s events for hundreds of people. I bought and at Dollar Tree and nobody noticed. Unless you’re throwing a really fancy party, no one will see the difference between Dollar Tree decorations and Party City decorations. I saw the and plastic table packs for $10 at Party City for $1 at Dollar Tree. Other stores have insane prices on these items, so stock up on products like:

  • Streamers
  • Plates
  • Gift bag
  • Hats
  • Balloons
  • Birthday candles
  • Birthday cards
  • Wrapping paper

2. Candy Cinema

You like movie candy? I love Buncha Crunch. Canned candy always tastes better! My husband and I like to go to Dollar Tree, buy our favorite boxes of chocolates and enjoy a movie. Since the dollar store sells specialty candy that lasts for years, it’s a good deal! I once saw a neighbor handing them out for Halloween.

3. Detergent

Most cleaning sprays are super concentrated. Unless otherwise stated in the instructions, nothing prevents you from diluting the cleaning spray with water to save money. If you don’t need a brand name Lysol, supermarket cleaners are good too. I like to buy Dollar Tree’s lemon cleaner and dilute it 50/50 with water. It keeps my counters clean, and the $1 price is an incredibly affordable find. If you’re cleaning, you can buy rags, brushes and trash bags at Dollar Tree.

4. Kitchen equipment

I’m not saying you should buy pots and pans at the dollar store, but you can get a lot of kitchen supplies cheap here. You can buy:

  • Silverware
  • Glassware
  • Measuring cup
  • Oven Mitts
  • Mug

…and more from the dollar store. I decorated my first apartment after college this way, so check out what kitchen finds are worthwhile.

5. Storage

I currently have a stack of Dollar Tree storage baskets in my office. They only cost a dollar and have a lid, making them perfect for organizing shelves. Of course, the dollar store storage containers are smaller and weaker than the more expensive containers in the container store. I wouldn’t put anything important or breakable in there, but if you need simple storage, it’s a cheap option.

6. Handcraft accessories

The Dollar Store is the best place to go if you are interested in handmade items. You’ll find all kinds of little things that are perfect for your latest sewing project, like… B :

  • Plastic flowers
  • Baskets
  • Vases
  • False Birds
  • Snowdrop
  • Moulds
  • Stone
  • Stickers
  • Decorative mirrors

7. Books and toys

At the Dollar Store, you won’t find the latest high-tech toys, but it’s still a great place to keep the kids entertained for little money. I take my three nieces to the Dollar Tree, give them a basket, and tell them to get loose. I certainly can’t give them the freedom to shop at Target like that! At $1 a toy, it’s a great way to entertain young children who love to shop. The Dollar Store also sells lots of books, crossword puzzles and coloring books. You may have to wade through a huge pile of books, but chances are you’ll find a good one every now and then. I love going to the Dollar Tree to buy crossword puzzles or word searches. word-image-2642
